Not since the Civil war had the country been so torn. Every American family was impacted, losing husbands, sons, and daughters. Over fifty thousand Americans were killed and many more still suffer deep physical and emotional scars . Veterans took their own lives, were treated as social outcasts, or ended up on the streets with the homeless. The Vietnam conflict was a war that many did not understand and that left a nation questioning the government they had always trusted. Some advocates within this movement advocated a unilateral withdrawal of U.S. forces from South Vietnam. In 1965 the movement began to gain national prominence. News reports of American military abuses, such as the 1968 My Lai Massacre, brought new attention and support to the anti-war movement bringing it to its height. The movement continued to prosper over the span of the conflict. The Má » ¹ Lai Massacre was the Vietnam War mass killing of between 347 and 504 unarmed civilians in South Vietnam on March 16, 1968. Victims included men, women, children, and infants. These hamlets were marked on the U.S. Army topographic maps as My Lai and My Khe. The U.S. military codeword for the alleged Viet Cong stronghold in that area was Pinkville, and the carnage was initially referred to as the Pinkville Massacre. In merit based selection, for example, even if the people vote not to retain the judge, the people of power in government just get to pick another one of their buddies. Another advantage is that elections allow the people to get to know the candidates better. Since the candidates must campaign for the election it is much easier for the voters to find out their judicial philosop hies and their qualifications for the job. If selection wasn’t done by election the people wouldn’t know anything about their judges because they would have no reason to get their name out and state their policies. This causes a lot of distrust among the people because the majority believes the campaign contributions influence judge’s decisions. Whether the contributions actually influence decisions or not, the people have lost some faith in the judicial which is the biggest problem. Also, the campaigns are problematic because usually whoever raises the most money wins the election. The candidate who raised the most money probably made the most promises to corporations and organizations, so this cou ld lead to some unfair and unjust trials. A problem not associated with the campaigns is that many voters do not know the judicial candidates very well. This is shown in the 2002 Republican Primary election with Judge Xavier Rodriguez. He was a sitting Supreme Court Justice supported by Governor Perry and the Republican Party who didn’t even win the primary. Many believe he didn’t win simply because of his name. i In conclusion, I believe that the merit based system of judicial is best for most of the country because it would allow judges to make decisions without having to feel obligated to anyone. However, this would not be realistic in Texas because I don’t think Texans would ever allow the vote to be taken out of their hands. I believe the best solution for Texas would be to restrict donations further and not allow candidates to know who their contributors are, like Idaho has done. This would eliminate judges being influenced by large contributors and would make the campaigns more equal because the corporations and organizations wouldn’t have incentive to give a lot of money.

Algernon and Jack Essays Algernon and Jack Essay Algernon and Jack Essay The Importance of Being Earnest By Oscar Wild was first performed on the 14th of February 1895, St Valentines Day. It is a play about love and romance in the upper classes, it is set in the present (1890s). It is drawing room comedy, otherwise known as comedy of manors. Oscar Wild is one of the worlds literary greats, he wrote this play shortly before he was imprisoned for gorse indecencies. This play is divided into 3 acts; I will be discussing and contrasting scenes one and two from the first act. It is a play about two idle young men, Algernon and Earnest (otherwise known as Jack), who in attempt to marry two very attractive young ladies pretend that there names are Earnest. In the first act the key relationships between Algernon and Jack are as friends who have not seen each other for a period off about a week. It is in the first scene that Algernon discovers that his friends name isnt earnest, its Jack. In the second scene Earnest proposes to Gwendolyn but gets refused by her mother and Algernon decides to go visit Jack in the country. I believe that too correctly portray the relationships between the two characters I need to show differences between; mood, tone, dress and personality. The first act, scene 1, opens with Algernon talking to his manservant in a very incoherent manor; I would portray Algernon as a man who is not very interested in anything but himself. Algernon is constantly talking in the first person always with emphasis on the word I this referring to himself, this gives the audience helpful insight into what really matters in life, him! Jack enters dressed in a smart but not ostentations attire, Algernon in contrast is dressed in an ostentatious suit with large cuffs and is eating. The men talk idly; Algernon is a dandy, he see only the pleasures in life and has no worries, I as Algernon would constantly smile, raise my eyebrows and lounge around on the couch or chair, crossing my legs and eating in a most informal manor. Jack is much more serious and formal, his clothes are a darker colour, he has come up too town to propose to her [Gwendolyn] this is making him nervous, but he is a complete gentlemen. He is easily manipulated by Algernon, the tone of his voice is slightly deeper then Algernons and I would portray his personality at this point as one who is board but as the same time is nervous. Jack confesses that his name isnt Earnest at all, its Jack, to Algernons amazement. At this time I, as Algernon, stand up horrified with looks of shock and stunned indignation upon my face and my tone would go up a note to signify surprise, I place my hand on my hips and stair at Jack up in arms that he did not tells this to me sooner. Lady Bracknell enters with Gwendolyn (Jacks bride to be) and I watch with pleasure as Jack squirms and blushes in front of Ms Fairfax (Gwendolyn) I leave the room to allow Jack to propose. Algernon is constantly trying to get one over on his naive friend but in contrast Jack (formally known as Earnest) has shown that in some ways such as; mood, tone and personality he is quite similar to Algernon and is not so naive and easily manipulated as one might think. Scene two, in mid proposal, on bended knee Lady Bracknell enters and is shocked at what she sees, I as Jack am even more shocked and suddenly start with absolute fright as the colour drains out of my face. Lady Bracknell begins to interview me as to my suitability to be married to her only daughter, I am extremely nervous, fiddling with my hand, running fingers through my hair and playing with my cuffs to show the audience just what an unpleasant situation it is. My voice is shaking. As the interview digresses I (Jack) starts to fell more comfortable with some of the questions, I starts to relax and gain more control over my emotions. Aunt Augusta then asks about my parentage (Jack is adopted) and I hurriedly confess that I have none, to her abhorrence lady Bracknell leaves and Jack is left looking stunned and shocked. Shakespeare wedding march can be heard coming from Algernons piano and he walks in very gay and debonair strutting and swinging his arms, he suddenly sees that his friend is very upset and his temperament changes to one of compassion, Gwendolyns always refusing people as if to tell Jack that he is not the only one. Jack confesses that it was Aunt Augusta that refused him, in contrast to the first scene Jack becomes less of a Gentleman and displays his anger by distributing Aunt Augusta, I as Jack have a very upset tone and am pacing, which is one of Algernons mannerisms. Gwendolyn enters and confesses her love to Jack, Jack is pleased and blushes, and he is once more his chivalrous self. Algernon confesses that his Aunt would not like this meeting taking place and is hurriedly told by Gwendolen to turn his back and give them privacy. I (Algernon) am not used to being told what to do especially in my own house, I pace over to the fireplace and start eavesdropping on there convocation in full view of the audience, I am trying to find Jacks address in the country and am behaving slightly sly about it. The scene ends with Jack rushing out on Algernon telling him that there meeting has not been a grate success, Jack is flushed, red in the face and peeved that is friend is acting so languidly about the whole situation. Jack leaves via stage right leaving Algernon and his manservant Lane occupying the stage. I look pleased and tell Lane to bring me some sherry, I am smiling, quite in contrast to Jacks last portrayal of his emotions, I stand up and confess in contrast to Jacks statement that the whole situation has been a great success and tell Lane, smiling and arrogantly, to fetch my suits as I am going to go visit Jack in the country and propose to his beautiful young ward whom I am in love with. I believe that as an actor the relationship between Jack and Algernon is not a complicated one. I as Algernon want to be married to Jacks excessively pretty young ward. Jack wants to be wed to my excessively pretty cousin, in this case are wants are similar. We both want to live happy, aimless lives with the woman we love. In my opium the only differences between Algernon and Earnest are there moods, personality, dress and tone; they both want the same things. As an actor I would portray this relationship kindly, in the first scene we are good friends and in slight contrast the second scene we are friends who have had a dispute but both know that we cannot stay exasperated at each other for ever and indeed in the final act, not to give the conclusion away, our relationship concludes, happily.

Factors affecting visual acuity Factors affecting Visual Acuity Visual acuity is measured in various different ways and that is dependent on the acuity task used. However factors affecting the visual acuity have to be taken into account. Visual acuity is affected by a number of ways such as diffraction, aberrations and photoreceptor density in the eye. There are a number of other factors too, which will be discussed more in depth in this article. Other factors that affect visual acuity include: Refractive error Size of the pupil Illumination Time exposure of target Area of retina stimulated State of adaptation of the eye Eye movements These factors will be discussed in detail below. Refractive Error Refractive error is one of the important factors that affect visual acuity. Refractive error affects visual acuity depending on the correction, either Hypermetropic or Myopic or an Emmetropic eye. Visual acuity is affected depending if it causes a defocus at the retina, in the case of a Hypermetropic or myopic eye this is the case. Defocus is when fine details, sharp edges and contrast detail is blurred out. In a Hypermetropic eye, the eye is too strong so the image is focused in front of the retina causing a defocus hence affecting visual acuity. The reverse occurs with a myopic eye, as the eye is too weak, the image is focused in front of the retina therefore again causing a defocus hence affecting visual acuity. On the other hand to obtain a perfect image, image should be focused sharply on the retina. This is the case in an emmetropic eye; no defocus hence no visual acuity problem due to refractive error. Having astigmatism also affects visual acuity. A phenomenon called the oblique effect states that oblique lines are seen less accurately, meaning that visual acuity is greater when lines are orientated horizontally or vertically. This is still the case even after a perfect correction of refractive error and astigmatism. Size of Pupil Eye takes time to see things. The nerve signals take a limited amount of time to travel along the optic nerve and instigate visual awareness. Therefore the size of pupil can determine how quickly or slow a signal can be stimulated thus determining how much visual acuity is affected. Large pupils let more light pass through into the eye so stimulating the retina more. However this does have a disadvantage; it affects resolution due to the aberrations that increase in the eye due to an increase in light. Small pupils reduce optical aberrations due to less light passing through into the eye however resolutions are diffraction limited. Therefore for good visual acuity a mid size pupil of approximately 3mm to 5mm is optimal as this is a compromise between the diffraction and aberration limits. Visual acuity also decreases with age due to decrease in pupil size, so a higher level of illumination is needed in older people to improve visual acuity. Illumination For recognition tasks, visual acuity increases with illumination. However at very high illumination levels, acuity may decrease because of loss of contrast between object and its background, or reflections on the surface of the object decreasing the contrast between the background and object. Higher the contrast between the object and the background the greater the acuity is. When contrast is reduced, it becomes more difficult to read it against a darker background therefore the text need to be made larger in order for the illumination levels to be correct for good visual acuity. Illumination levels greatly affect the older generation due to many people having cataracts. The cataract becomes a source of veiling glare within the eye therefore visual acuity decreases. Time Exposure of the Target To detect a small bright spot, detection is greatly dependent on the quantity of light rather than the exposure time. However to detect a line, the acuity is proportional to the exposure time. There is no simple acuity-exposure time relationship for the resolution of the target. Area of the Retina Stimulated Visual acuity is greatest at the centre of fixation, which in this case is at the fovea. Fovea has the greatest visual acuity due to the densely packed cones, so once the image is moved away from the centre of fixation visual acuity is affected. At a distance of 5 minutes of arc from the centre of fixation, there is a loss in visual acuity. At approximately 10 minutes of arc from fixation there is about 25% visual acuity loss. This shows that our vision is most accurate at the fovea and acuity falls rapidly as we move towards the peripheral retina. Therefore in order to achieve best visual acuity we must scan our visual field to place the fovea on the area of interest and to achieve this we must have excellent oculo-motor co-ordination. State of Adaptation of the Eye Highest level of acuity is achieved if the eye is tailored to the equivalent level as the test luminance of 34cd/m2 to 34,000cd/m2. Test luminance less than 34cd/m2 will achieve to some extent, better acuity. Under photopic conditions, the high density of cones at the fovea is accountable for the high levels of acuity. Under scotopic conditions it is a little altered, due to the Aii Amacrine cells appearing to limit resolution. Maximum scotopic acuity occurs at 5-15 degrees eccentricity which is corresponding to the cell density, while peak rod density occurs at about 15-20 degrees. Eye Movements In steady eye fixation, the eyes are in constant motion; therefore moving objects are more difficult to see than stationary objects thus affecting visual acuity. Visual acuity will be greater when point of interest is constant or little movement however visual acuity will be at a great loss when object is in constant movement. Conclusion: Dynamic visual acuity is lower than Static visual acuity. Conclusion Visual acuity is measured in a number of different procedures however it is dependant on many factors. Visual acuity cannot just be taken as a figure without considering all the factors that affect it. Such as the refractive error, size of pupil, illumination, area of retina stimulated, adaptation of the eye, eye movements and time exposure of the target. In March, Brenda could not return to work on her scheduled date and had her medical leave extended until she became better accustomed to the chemotherapy treatments. Brenda returned to work on April 1st. She was apparently not up to speed and could not handle the work that was assigned to her. In addition, she stated that she needed some accommodations in order to stay at work. These accommodations included rest hours during the workday and the need to leave work early on certain days. Eloise allowed these accommodations. When Brenda started taking breaks and putting her feet up on her desk to relax, the other workers didn’t seem to mind, and they would even try to be quiet around her. Brenda felt like the other workers had changed their attitude towards her and â€Å"freeze up when she came into the room.† Eloise tried to explain that it would be natural for the others to feel uncomfortable around her and recommended that Brenda speak to Employee Counseling. Brenda refused and soon thereafter started to call in sick again. Even with Brenda’s return, the other workers still had to continue doing her work. The worker that Eloi se upgraded to a GS9 was returned to GS7 upon Brenda’s return. He refused to do Brenda’s work unless he was reinstated to GS9 status.
